Quarry Bank Mill, Styal
This project formed the basis for an initial concept and brief development for a new arrival and orientation point for the National Trust at the Quarry Bank Mill.
SALT were approached to discuss initial ideas for the site which is fragmented and dispersed. We were asked to unify the site through landscaping features and a new orientation point which would serve as an initial ticket point before guests visited the rest of the site.
The concept explores the idea of people weaving organically though the arrival car park space towards the new building like threads, ultimately gathering to form the ‘cloth’, a more formal landscape space where interpretation, orientation and ticket purchasing can take place.
Drawn through the building, exploring the landscape of orientation, people are released once more from the cloth to take the different journeys through the rich landscape and buildings that form the Quarry Bank Mill.
Works were undertaken by Armitage Construction and completed in 2018.
